There are few natural disasters that bring up the type of fear that tornadoes do. This is due to the unpredictability of the path a tornado can take. Since tornadoes do untold billions of damage to homes every year, even costing some their lives, it is important that you know how to keep yourself and your family as safe as possible in such an event.
There are some homes that are unsafe in themselves. Mobile homes do not really have a safe spot, since a tornado could pick up the whole home and toss it. If you have a dirt cellar or something similar in your yard, that is where you want to be.
If you live in a regular home, your first option for shelter is usually the basement, but if you don’t have one, or if there is no safe way for you to get down there, you should try to use the strongest points of your house as a protection.
The area underneath a staircase, a sturdy inner room or inside the tub in your bathroom are some good options. Make sure, however, that you cover yourself with a mattress or something similar to protect you from falling debris.
