With many older, gas operated appliances, you will find a pilot light. Pilot lights are used to light the natural gas in your appliance. While modern appliances use an electric ignition, which doesn’t work when the power is out, there are several disadvantages to pilot lights that led to them being phased out of use.

One problem is waste. Your pilot light will burn day and night, no matter how seldom you use a particular appliance. Adding that up over a year’s worth of use and for each appliance you have, can be quite significant.

Another problem is safety. If the pilot light goes out, it might have a failsafe that will turn off the gas supply, but if this isn’t the case, or if the failsafe were to malfunction, you could have dangerous gas buildup inside your home, with the risk of explosion. You should always vent out the area well before trying to reignite a pilot light.
