The one thing that most people are worried about when they are working in their backyard is being exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac. These three plants are related, and they all have similar effects on humans that are exposed. The symptoms vary from person to person, but they involve blisters, itching and other allergic reactions. The problem is that the oil that causes these symptoms spreads easily when touched, and it can stick on your skin and clothes and thus be spread to other people.
Poison ivy is even dangerous when burned. Inhaling the smoke from burning poison ivy could cause a serious reaction. You should never burn poison ivy, since it could harm not just you, but even your neighbors.
When it comes to these three plants, it is definitely best to err on the side of caution. Wear protective clothing and clean your clothes off well after you are done.
