If you are in a home improvement store shopping for lumber, you might run into a term that is unfamiliar for many DIY people out there – green lumber. It might be that you notice it because of the significantly lower price of green lumber compared to other types of lumber.
So what is it, and why is it cheaper? Simply said, it is lumber that hasn’t gone through as thorough drying as other types of lumber. Often lumber will be dried in a kiln. This is because a high moisture content in lumber can lead to issues when it is installed, such as mold, shrinkage, and cracking. Of course, the amount of issues that you get from using green lumber varies greatly depending on where in the country you live. In areas where the weather is warm and dry, the lumber can dry naturally fairly quickly, and therefore you will also see it more commonly sold in those areas.
